🔋 Power Outages, Battery Backup & Critical Services

Last updated on Feb 06, 2026

Does NBN Work During a Power Outage?

In most cases, no.

NBN equipment at your premises requires power. During an outage:

  • Internet services stop

  • VoIP phones stop

  • Connected services (alarms, lift phones) may stop

Battery Backup (FTTP)

Some FTTP setups include battery backup units, but:

  • They have limited runtime

  • Batteries degrade over time

  • Not all services are supported

Battery backup should not be relied on without testing.

Planning for Critical Services

Businesses with:

  • Emergency lift phones

  • Medical alarms

  • Security systems

Should consider:

  • LTE backup

  • Redundant connections

  • Regular testing
